What is an Evaporative Cooler?
An Evaporative cooler (more commonly referred to as a "Swamp Cooler") is essentially a water
resevoir with water soaked filters that sucks hot air in through the filter system and exhausts cooler
air using the evaporative process.
How does an evaporative cooler work?
Water evaporation is the key to this process. Taking an air moving system to pull hot air through
moist pads where the air is then cooled by the evaporative process is known as Evaporative Cooling.
It has long been in existence and is now coming into popularity due to its very low operational costs
(As much as 75% cheaper than Air Conditioning). Evaporation happens all the time. Our bodies
perspire and through evaporation sweat dries and our body temperature drops. Dry air passing over
water has the ability to absorb more moisture thats why you always feel cooler by a body of water! An
Evaporative cooler simply mimics this process bringing the temperature down o average 20-25
degrees!
How well does an evaporative cooler work?
This all depends on the temperature and humidity of the air outside. Most evaporative coolers
operate comfortably under a wide variety of summertime temperatures. As an added benefit
evaporative coolers also offer the constant movement of air created by the blower giving a wind chill
of 4-6 degrees lower than your thermostat may read. Evaporative coolers also work best during the
hottest times of the day. As the temperature outside increases the humidity typically drops and the
units are able to operate more effectively.
What are the benefits of Evaporative cooling?
- 75% less operating costs compared to Air Conditioning units
- Half the cost of an Air conditioning unit for comparable room size.
- Operates on 110-120v Electriclty and uses only 1.5 amps!
- A complete change of fresh air typically takes anywhere from 1-3 minutes! An air conditioner
recycles the air already in your home.
What are the negatives of Evaporative cooling?
- Work best in dry climates. if air is hot and muggy the units will blow hot and muggy air as there
is no ability for the air to absorb any additional moisture.
- Water consumption can run 3-15 gallons a day.
